Charles Bukowski Born Into This Documentary
German born, American writer Charles Bukowski has the kind of story that begged for a full length documentary. Finally, in 2003, nine years after his death in 1994, that came in the compelling film Born Into This.
It beautifully chronicles his entire life, up from his abusive and isolating childhood and adolescence, all the way through to finding his way as a successful writer. Along the way it probes into his hard drinking, menial labor scrabble to survive and find a way to get his work read. His name and influence continue to grow after his death.
Bukowski published six novels during his life: Post Office, Factotum, Women, Ham on Rye, Hollywood (about his experience writing Barfly), and the detective novel Pulp – the only one not to feature his alter-ego Henry Chinaski. He was also the author of numerous poetry and short story collections, as well as authoring numerous columns and essays.
Charles Bukowski is arguably more famous now than when he died, at least in his home country, and much of that is owed to the Born Into This documentary finally coming together.
