The Australian psychedelic indie rock band Tame Impala has taken to their Facebook page to ask fans if they should allow their music to be licensed for a commercial.
They wrote: “got offered $100,000 for a song to be on a mobile phone ad. What should i do fans????”
At the time of writing, there are over 2,000 comments. Most of them have been in support of Tame Impala allowing the music to be included in the mobile phone ad, with a decently sized minority saying taking the $100,000 would make the band sell outs.
With the sorry state of album sales these days, it’s getting a lot harder to blame bands – especially smaller ones like Tame Impala – for taking the money and exposure that comes with allowing their music to be used in commercials.
Those fans who are making the accusations of “sell out” apparently aren’t aware that the band already licensed their song “Elephant” from Lonerism for use in a Blackberry commercial. You can watch that below.
Shortly after making the post, the band added in the comments of the status: “All your responses pretty much illustrate exactly what’s been going on in my head the last 12 hours!”
