Street artist Banksy came to New York City in October, 2013 for a residency called Better Out Than In. He created stencil works, as well as installations slash performance art pieces such as the shoe shine boy polishing Ronald McDonald’s shoes in front of a McDonald’s in the Bronx.

This residency inspired one of the best episodes of the online, animated series Brooklynians, called “Banksy in Brooklyn.” In the episode, Banksy paints a piece on one of the character’s (David) apartment building. He’s facing eviction after informing the landlord that this isn’t your average bit of graffiti.

What happens when a building’s owner suddenly finds himself the recipient of an original Banksy is an interesting topic, with many possible outcomes, and is beautifully outlined in the book Banksy: The Man Behind the Wall, by Will Ellsworth-Jones. It’s required reading for Banksy fans.

The episode hits its height when the Banksy’s works start coming to life, all unhelpfully. The episode’s structure, yet its willingness to be playful and absurd, is one of the outstanding features of Brooklynians. You can watch more episodes of the show for free here.
