Watch the 1939 film classic Stagecoach.
Stagecoach, directed by the legendary John Ford and starring John Wayne in his breakout role, elevated the Western above the B movie genre it had been previously, establishing it as more than a film niche oddity.
It received overwhelmingly positive reviews upon its release and earned Ford the 1939 New York Film Critics Circle Awards for Best Director. Orson Welles said it was a perfect textbook for how to craft a movie, and claimed to have watch it over 40 times as research before making Citizen Kane.
A new, high definition restoration was made for The Criterion Collection. The Criterion Collection DVD of Stagecoach also includes an interview with John Ford from 1968, as well as interviews with other filmmakers and Western film experts about the movie, a 1917 silent Western film by Ford called Bucking Broadway, among other extras.
