Jordan Peterson, the controversial and increasingly popular academic and writer, has weighed in on marijuana legalization in Canada. The country legalized the substance for recreational use last month, becoming only the second country in the world to do so.

Peterson was doing a live streaming session when one of his fans asked what he thought about his native country making the major change to its laws around the drug.

“It’s about time, that’s my thoughts,” the professor began. “I think that once a certain number of people break a law, then it’s not reasonable to have the law.”

“It was irrational in some sense for marijuana to be illegal, especially given that alcohol is legal, because alcohol is way more dangerous than marijuana. I’m more or less Libertarian on this front. It’s like, smoke your damn pot and try not to act like too much of a moron when you’re stoned. That’s what it looks like to me.”

He continued that this is his outlook when it comes to consciousness altering substances in general.

“I think that the danger of restricting people’s freedoms unnecessarily is more dangerous than not restricting them. So, you’re entitled to go to hell in a hand basket in your own manner.”

Peterson added that the drug war results in high incarceration rates, as well as the enrichment of dangerous criminals by allowing the drug trade to remain in the hands of criminals. He suggested perhaps the government should tax and regulate drugs, as it does with cigarettes and gambling.

He also noted that chemists are good at making similar drugs that are different enough to get around legislation, resulting in a sort of wack-a-mole game.
