Christians are upset that Canada will soon issue a coin celebrating the 50th anniversary of the decriminalization of homosexuality with a $1 coin.

While details have been kept somewhat under wraps by The Royal Canadian Mint, to “maximize impact” when it is officially unveiled. What has been discovered is that it will contain the years 1969-2019, and the word “Equality” in both English and French.

A cabinet order said the design with feature a “stylized rendering of two overlapping human faces within a large circle, the left half of the left face in front view and the right face in profile facing left, the two faces forming one whole face in front view composed of two eyes with eyebrows, a nose, a mouth and two ears with a small hoop earring on the left ear,” the CBC reported.

Some Christians see this as a celebration of gay sex, and have launched a petition asking the government to not issue what they are calling the “gay loonie,” and “pro-homosexual one dollar coin.”

“Just because homosexual acts have been legalized, that does not mean they should be celebrated or commemorated. Divorce is also legal – many restrictions on divorce were lifted in 1969, but that does not call for the minting of a ‘pro-divorce’ one dollar coin,” the petition reads.

It adds that “minting a coin to celebrate homosexuality, the government is not only stepping back into the debate, but it is taking a strong stand on one side.”

The petition has just shy of 35,000 signatures, with a goal of 50,000.

In 2017, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau apologized for the nation’s past discrimination against gay people.

His father, Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau, decriminalized gay sex in 1969.
