A Waiter and Two Waitresses Get a $200 Tip
Waiters and waitresses are among the hardest working, lowest paid Americans in the workforce. As tipped employees, their minimum wage is set at $2.13 an hour (you can thank the other NRA, the National Restaurant Association, for that). Granted, the tips combined with the hourly wage has to equal the federal minimum wage, which itself is only $7.25 an hour.
While plenty of servers, it should be said, do quite well for themselves, many more are scraping by to survive. This is especially true in less fancy restaurants, such as the ones visited by the two men responsible for tipping their servers $200 in the above video.
They are Andrew Hales and Stuart Edge, of the YouTube channel/website LAHWF (Losing all hope was freedom).
The responses they get are quite moving.
One waiter asks that they remind everyone how low they are paid hourly, and admits to really needing the money. Another server is a woman who was recently hit while on her bicycle. The staff got a collection together to buy her a new bike, and while $200 isn’t going to change her life, it’s clear that she could probably use the extra money as well.
