Charlie Day appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon ahead of the premiere of the 10th season of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia to promote the show and talk baseball great Wade Boggs’ impressive slash concerning drinking ability. Longstanding rumor had it that Boggs would typically drink anywhere from 40 to 70 beers on cross country flights ahead of games.

The legends of Boggs’ knocking back all those drinks informs the season premiere, where the gang tries to beat this record, and then hit baseballs – because, as Day explains, “‘Cause not only would he drink 70 beers, but then he’d go like three for four.” Boggs agreed to be a part of the episode, appearing to Charlie as hallucination.

According to Day, Boggs pulled him aside to clear up the story, but not in the way you might think. He didn’t tell him that it was an exaggeration. On the contrary, he claims that he once drank 107 beers. Which seems impossible, but if anyone could do it, it just might be Wade Boggs. Day also claims that Boggs was drinking real beer on set, instead of the prop beer that the It’s Always Sunny stars were drinking. “He’s an alcoholic,” Days says, “but highly functioning.” Both Fallen and Day are quick to say, “No, no, no.” But it sounds like in reality the answer is, yes, he is. But indeed, highly functioning.
